AES Philippines bags three Asian Power Awards

AES Philippines, a subsidiary of global energy company the AES Corporation, garnered top honors in the recent 2011 Asian Power Awards held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The company won a Gold Award for Independent Power Producer of the Year, another Gold Award for Best Power Plant Upgrade in Asia, and a Silver Award for Best Operations and Maintenance Project in Asia. These awards were in recognition of the successful rehabilitation of the Masinloc Power Plant in Zambales, a power facility acquired by the company in 2008.

The Asian Power Awards, organized by Singapore-based company Asian Power Magazine, serves to recognize the region’s top industry players who relentlessly strive for excellence.

“To receive these awards from Asian Power is truly an honor. I attribute our success to our team’s professionalism, passion and determination,” says Andy Horrocks, Country Manager of AES Philippines.  “We will continue to strive for operational excellence – proof of our commitment to support the Philippines as a provider of safe and reliable energy.

Through the comprehensive rehabilitation program, AES Philippines was able to restore the plant’s mechanical infrastructure and improved boiler efficiency and environmental controls. These improvements resulted in a 13 percent increase in the plant’s efficiency and 31 percent increase in output. Apart from the physical improvements, a more pro-active safety culture was also promoted by the company.

Last June, AES Philippines was also given recognition by the Edison Electric Institute, winning in the international category of the Edison Award. The Edison Award is one of the most prestigious global awards in the energy industry recognizing U.S. and international electric utilities for outstanding leadership, innovation and contribution to the advancement of the electric industry for the benefit of all.

The Masinloc power plant was also recently recognized by Power Magazine as one of the top coal-fired plants in the world for 2011. Plants included in the “top” list demonstrated creative and trendsetting innovations that could further inspire developments in the power industry. Winning plants will be awarded in the ELECTRIC POWER Conference & Exhibition scheduled next year.
